He believed that children with special needs would benefit from an integrated program that comprehensively addressed their educational, emotional, and social needs. He began with one student. Nearly 100 years later, Anderson Center for Autism continues Dr. Anderson’s work, currently serving hundreds of children and adults with a primary diagnosis of autism.
On a wooded estate overlooking the Hudson River, Dr. Victor V. Anderson founded Anderson School in 1924. He believed that children with special needs would benefit from an integrated program that comprehensively addressed their educational, emotional, and social needs. He began with one student. To allow you and your family to have a more intimate visiting experience with your loved one, there are two family visiting rooms in the upper east floor of the Village Center. Family visiting rooms are reserved with the Residence Manager for up to two hours at a time. While in the family visiting rooms, you and your loved one can enjoy a movie, listen to music, and have a special meal together using the small kitchenette.

Organic Outcomes is Anderson's year round garden program, where students use the garden as a cross- curricular learning lab offering vocational opportunities, community inclusion, daily exercise, sensory integration, and a fun way to learn about the natural world around them. With two gardens and an indoor greenhouse on campus, students start their plants from seed and care for them every step of the way as they grow.

There are over 500 sound absorption ceiling panels hanging from the gymnasium ceiling. These help reduce echoing throughout the gymnasium.
Anderson Center for Autism’s MEALLS (Making Eating a Lifelong Learning Skill) program is an interdisciplinary approach to address feeding disorders. The program is based on the SOS Approach to Feeding and is founded on using the 25-32 step process to eating, beginning with sensory systems. The primary focus of this program is not to eat/consume, but to interact with the food, creating positive relationships with the foods and mealtimes itself, as many individuals with picky eating have had negative experiences with food that they are being asked to eat. The goal is to make mealtimes enjoyable again.

On average, there are 95-100 special diets which are individual meal plans according to needs identified by a doctor, nurse, dietitian, speech pathologist, or other qualified professional.

We encourage family visits and offer two private family visiting rooms in our Village Center, each with a bathroom, kitchenette and living room space, free of charge for any family looking to visit their loved one for a day visit on campus whether for a short time, or even to celebrate a special family event!

Fresh fruits and vegetables are harvested weekly by the students and are enjoyed fresh in the garden, or are brought into the school for cooking groups. The garden has become a foundational part of students' daily routine, where they are able to learn new skills and work independently. We love filling our gardens with fresh flowers, culinary herbs, strawberries, and so many delicious vegetables.

The education program is rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis, which leads to many successful outcomes for our students.

One visit to the Anderson Education Center and you’ll see a building bustling with children walking (or on scooters, or a trike perhaps) through hallways alongside some peers and a member of the Anderson team, heading to a special like gym or art, maybe to lunch in our cafeteria, or on their way back from a trip to the nursing clinic.

Physical Education at Anderson Center for Autism is taught by Certified Adaptive PE teachers, with a passion for introducing students to the joy and health benefits of moving their bodies. Whether an individual obstacle course, a summer swim in the outdoor pool, or a class focused on a team sport, the gymnasium is always active!

Each RN has a specific caseload and is responsible for overseeing medical care and treatment of the children we serve. The RN’s collaborate with support staff, families, and community based physicians, from Albany to Westchester, to provide routine and/or emergency care services. We also contract with local physicians who provide in-house medical care once per week.
